Digital Signage: Popular terms & concepts
Although Digital Signage is a nascent technology, it has many origins and consequently a confusing terminology. Glance through the IceMini Reckoner to understand the terms we use.

Ad/ File
: A static or dynamic file that is displayed on the digital signage.

Bandwidth: The actual transfer of ads in MB to and from the server. [The server maybe transferring ads to the screen or a user maybe uploading ads in the server.]

Campaign: 'Where', 'Which' and 'When' come together under a Campaign. The digital screen on which content is to be displayed, exactly which content is to be displayed and when it has to be displayed are defined under a Campaign.

Contents: A very generic term. Ads that are shown on the screen, files that are stored in the server can all be defined as Contents.

Day Schedule: Essentially, the 'When' of a Campaign.

Default Content: If a particular file or a playlist has to be continuously played on a screen in a loop, then it is defined as Default Content.

Diskspace:The actual amount of server space being occupied by the all the ads that have been uploaded by the user to the server.

File: A file is a static image/ a video clip/ a flash file that is to be displayed on the screen. Before it can be displayed on the screen. It has to be uploaded to the server and scheduled to play as Default Content or in a Campaign.

Group: A bunch of Players is a Group. All these Players have the same Player Layout and display the same Content at the same time. Groups can be easily formed, edited and disbanded.

Group Layout: All Players in a Group have the same Layout. This is called a Group Layout.

Location:This can mean an actual place where the screen is kept or where the player attached to the screen is kept.

Module:This term applies to a software functionality which can be easily integrated later into the software.

my.icemini.com:This is our secure & hosted, content & network management application. You can log on to it using your username and password from anywhere in the world and manage the Content, Players, Groups, Campaigns, Screens, view & print Reports, edit User Accounts and so on.

Online Database:Online Database is a term used for defining the collection of content files of a particular network on the server.

Periodic Schedule:Essentially, the 'When' of a Campaign.

Player:This is the actual hardware attached to a screen which downloads the schedule & content to be played, plays back the content on the screen and sends reports back to the server.

The IceMini DS 3.0 Player Software which you will download can be installed on a piece of hardware like the PC you are using right now and attached to a screen.

Thus your PC becomes your Player.

Player ID:This is a unique 5-digit number given by the hosted network & content management application, my.icemini.com to a Player. A Player can also be given a name and description for convenient reference.

Player Layout:The Player can be divided into 'zones' or 'shows' which will play different content files or playlists. Thus, the screen attached to a Player can play 3 different files/ playlists at a time and simultaneously display 2 different tickers.

Playlist:This a bunch of files [static images/ video clips/ flash files] which are grouped in a particular sequence. In a Campaign, a Playlist can be directly scheduled to play, thus saving the hassle of scheduling one file at a time. A Playlist can be created, edited or deleted.

Remote Manager:The Remote Manager is operated through my.icemini.com and can switch on, switch off and reboot the Players in your network.

Report:Reports can be Player-wise, Group-wise or Campaign-wise and for a particular period of time.

Screen:This is the LCD/ Plasma TV/ any digital screen attached to the Player on location.

Screen mock-up:This is the way the screen will be divided into different 'shows' to play different content.

Server:This is the computer to which the Players and the Users connect through my.icemini.com, which carries out all the tasks: Player Management, Group Management, Content Management, User Management, Campaign Execution, Report Generation and so on.

Show:This is the Content being played in a particular zone on the screen. There can be as many as 1 -3 shows being played simultaneously.

Ticker:This is plain text that scrolls at the bottom of the screen. There can be as many as 2 different tickers on the screen simultaneously. It can also display a live feed from RSS.

User:This is you or any person who uses my.icemini.com to register players or upload content or make campaigns or print reports.

Zone:This is an area of the screen which will play a Show. There can be as many as 1 -3 zones on the screen at once.
